Punk Art Will Never Die!
Posted 05 January 2010 | by Tim Eastman

If you know anything about punk then you know that among other things it has produced some really amazing art. From Raymond Pettibon's flyers and album artwork for Black Flag to Winston Smith's collages for the Dead Kennedys, art has had a strong role in the formation and dissemination of the punk ideology. Being in a punk mood this morning, we thought we'd plug you into a few websites where you can get your oy! on. Art of the State is a website that collects classic art as well as recent street art by Banksy and others. The Center for Punk Arts highlights individual artists and provides news about upcoming exhibitions. Finally, 98Bowery has provided an online reproduction of the full catalogue from a 1978 exhibition of punk art at the Washington Project for the Arts. Rise Above!

In The Streets

Zoe Strauss is one of the few bona fide street photographers still around today. Her recent book "America" is a visual confrontation with the seldom-seen, downtrodden edges of society. Unlike many street photographers—and photographers in general—Strauss let's us see not just her final product but also the vast pool of images from which she makes her selections. You can be witness to Strauss's creative process at her flickr page, where she posts a lot of her pictures.

If you're a reggae fan then you're a fan of Lee 'Scratch' Perry. Rumor has it that Perry was conceived when a comet made sweet love to a customs officer who was also Neptune, God of the Sea. Three tigers and Abraham Lincoln were also involved.

This is the kind of quality information you can get at the Eternal Thunder website, a tribute to the musical genius featuring a library of over 30 podcasts exploring Perry's career so far.

Teenagers From Mars

Anyone who watched The X-Files is aware that strangers from another planet have been walking among us for some time now. Although they mostly go undetected, these braineaters sometimes experience lapses in camouflage. The most recent example was the appearance for several hours on December 9th of a large triangular object hovering over the Kremlin in Moscow. This was the same day that an enormous spiral of blue light appeared in the Norwegian sky, supposedly the result of a failed Russian rocket test. Logical conclusion? The Aliens are shooting down our nukes.

Who's Your Daddy?
Posted 21 December 2009 | by Tim Eastman

What do you do when your father leaves to start another family, suddenly becoming a stranger to you? Some would seek therapy, some would ambush him on Maury Povich, and some would probably not know what to do. If you're photographer Johanna Heldebro you stalk him with your camera, secretly taking pictures of him in his daily life. Heldebro is the recipient of 3rd Ward's quarterly solo show and her images, on display through Jan. 27, will shock you with their desperate longing.
