Tokion likes artist Penelope Umbrico, and is very excited about her new exhibition at LMAKprojects in Manhattan. For the show the artist collected 35 photos of TVs for sale on craigslist. In each screen the living space of the seller is reflected, so that they unintentionally reveal personal details in a public forum. LMAKprojects is located at 139 Eldridge St. and the show is currently on view. Tune in.

American Suburb X
Posted 11 January 2010 | by Tim Eastman

Remember when you were growing up and you lived in the suburbs and every day you were like "this place sucks as soon as I'm old enough I'm moving to New York/L.A.!" If you were lucky, at some point you had a really cool teacher or some other adult who was like "take it easy" and who also exposed you to lots of sweet cultural stuff that you didn't know about.

The photography blogsite American Suburb X is a lot like that teacher or other adult. The site features interviews with well-known photographers, select image galleries and theory articles like "Stylistic Trials and Documentary Tribulations in Richard Avedon's 'In the American West'" and "Point and Shoot: How the Abu Ghraib Images Redefine Photography." The site features plenty for your eyes and your brain. As Larry Sultan says in one interview: "Find something that draws you back and calls to you."

American English
Posted 06 January 2010 | by Tim Eastman

Jean Baudrillard once wrote of America: "Mournful, monotonous, and superficial though it may be, it is paradise." Well, mister, you just try telling that to artist Ron English. Seriously, tell him because I think he would agree. His awesome paintings certainly seem to, with their bright and colorful depictions of a world saturated in colorful fantasy. As seen on TV!

Twitting Mad
Posted 06 January 2010 | by Tim Eastman

One of the great things about the internet is that if you're angry about something, you don't have to just yell at the wall or cat. You can yell at the WHOLE english-speaking WORLD. One of the downsides is that the whole world can hear you. AngryTweets.com collects the angry things people say via Twitter, updating continuously throughout the day. From "fuck trains" to "why the fuck is this weak ass garfield show on tv...cartoon network fell off," you can read what the world is angry about, up to the minute.

Punk Art Will Never Die!
Posted 05 January 2010 | by Tim Eastman

If you know anything about punk then you know that among other things it has produced some really amazing art. From Raymond Pettibon's flyers and album artwork for Black Flag to Winston Smith's collages for the Dead Kennedys, art has had a strong role in the formation and dissemination of the punk ideology. Being in a punk mood this morning, we thought we'd plug you into a few websites where you can get your oy! on. Art of the State is a website that collects classic art as well as recent street art by Banksy and others. The Center for Punk Arts highlights individual artists and provides news about upcoming exhibitions. Finally, 98Bowery has provided an online reproduction of the full catalogue from a 1978 exhibition of punk art at the Washington Project for the Arts. Rise Above!
